This is one of my favorite discs. There are a few rcognizable names, sure, but the bulk of the artists featured were new to me when I took a chance and ordered it. The production value is sometimes less than stellar, but remember the locations where the bands recorded were often primitive by our modern standards. It does nothing to deter from the feel of the CD, however. The songs here transport me to a different time and place. Texas in the late 40s and early 50s, before rock n roll and television changed the dance hall scene forever. A small, sweaty joint with a neon sign and a row of Fords, Chevys and Plymouths parked in the gravel. A small band playing loud or a Wurlitzer jukbox blaring an Ernest Tubb number as you walk up and order a Pearl or Jax from the bar. Pretty girls in Western cut blouses and skirts or dresses that cling just right. A fight breaks out sometimes but they end up out in the parking lot. So will I if I get another look from that redhead...
